Ruin. That's a great word in general and a great word here. In the Julian Barnes novel Metroland, he talks about 13 year old boys yelling it semi-sarcastically no matter what goes wrong. You've dropped your book. "RUIN!!!" You say something stupid to a girl. "RUIN!!!!"
Anyway. I particularly like it here because it makes me think both of "ruin" in the Puritanical, reputation sense (i.e., woman of ruin) and also of slow corrosion, the kind that turns towers into ruins.
cammila, your comments are always so interesting- the metroland boys yelling RUIN, sounds funny and insightful, in a wierd sort of way. the slow wilting of one's willpower to a the force of a most excellent yet devious lover is what is going on here.
